Pillar and Post Inn

Niagara on the Lake, Niagara

The hotel

One of Canada’s finest country inns, the Pillar and Post was built in the late 1890s. Since then, it has been lovingly transformed into an AAA Four-Diamond hotel, oozing with charm and elegance. Guest rooms are very well equipped, not only with modern amenities but also delightful contemporary, comfortable furnishings. The sunlight streams in through skylights and there are beautiful terracotta floors throughout. A range of superb amenities include an outdoor swimming pool to splash about in or a heated indoor pool if the weather’s cooler. There’s also a fitness centre with sauna and steam room but the real star of the show is 100 Fountain Spa, perhaps the best in North America. A haven of wellness and relaxation, you can treat yourself to a wine tasting of a different sort here! Harnessing the powerful antioxidant nature of grapes and grape seed extract, your Head to Toe Wine Taster includes a Vinotherapy Facial, a Purple Feet Pedicure and ends with a Vinotherapy Wellness Wrap — pure and utter bliss! Feeling completely rejuvenated, float along to Vintages Wine Bar and Lounge to feast on classic pub fare and local wines. For something a little more substantial, the Cannery Restaurant serves gorgeous steaks and seafood along with pizzas fresh from a brick oven.

We went for a girls break on the Vintages summer getaway deal and if you can still get in on this, do it!! We went mid-week just before the long weekend and it was fantastic. Covid info: very very well done. cleaning of any surface immediately after a patron vacated, including the pool loungers. Washrooms are locked so that they can monitor and sanitize after each use. No in-room cleaning during the stay to minimize contact. I loved that we used text to express needs with the front desk. The best thing about the hotel is the pool and the staff. The pool really made it for us. It is one of the few hotels with a pool and it really made a difference when you come home from the wineries or biking and just chill by the pool afterwards. The staff is super friendly - each one of them! I don't know if it is just during Covid - I haven't been there before. Frankly, I found everyone in Niagara on the Lake to be so friendly, helpful and just lovely. Maybe there isn't tourist-fatigue but I get the feeling that the people are just like that! We had a room that was outside access overlooking the pool. I recommend those rooms that are 240-246. The rooms are clean and roomy enough. The hotel needs some updating overall but they have taken some time to refresh things while they were closed. The food at the Cannery for dinner was very good. Our meal was included in the getaway and everything we ate at the hotel was very good except the breakfast. The ingredients made for just a ho-hum breakfast. It was disappointing but it was also included in our rate and it would not deter me from going again. With our deal, we got to eat at the Prince of Wales (sister hotel) one night as well. I much preferred the food at the Pillar and Post and I preferred the outdoor dining there as well. I would probably have eaten there twice instead of at the Prince of Wales. Overall, I would definitely choose this hotel again, especially if you can get the summer package that includes dinner and breakfast in your rate. Read less

So vacationing this year and maybe next is looking a bit different for me thanks to C-19! Staying local for a while. We stayed at Pillar and post for a quick getaway at Niagara-on-the-Lake. New to my reviews will be a C-19 category. Atmosphere: super charming place that for the most part was quiet. I was a bit surprised to see that other guests had brought kids ... I always thought NOTL was more of an adult place given its all about the wine tasting. Room: the rooms are nice ... rustic and charming. I personally prefer something a bit more modern but that’s not the vibe down here with any of the hotels. Service: the staff here is great, very accommodating and friendly. They go out of their way to make you feel welcome. Pool and amenities: I didn’t use the spa so no comment on that (although it looks great). The outdoor pool is small but did it’s job. It was great to lay out in the mornings and go for a dip before the wine tastings started. The pool side drink service almost made me feel like I was at a resort! C-19 protocols: this should be important to everyone as we all try to be good humans in effort to control the spread. The main areas has well communicated protocols, the staff all wore masks and social distancing protocols were in place. I did Lysol spray down the room when I got here but it was totally clean/sanitized when I got there with little things that make you feel safe (glasses in sealed bags, etc.). Food: the cannery restaurant food is great. We visited right when they had opened the restaurant for inside dining - I would have preferred that they maintained their outdoor dining space... not everyone is comfortable eating inside and it’s summer... we want to be outside. Opportunities: Ice cream for purchase at the pool and let guests know that housekeeping is not available. Totally get why but it would have been great if someone let us know. Overall a good stay! Before anything, I felt safe - masks worn everywhere (except pool and restaurant), one family at a time in elevators, zones in pools, loungers/chairs cleaned between each user; in the room all glassware clean and wrapped in clear plastic bags, all extra requested room items brought in clear plastic bags, Great weekend getaway, wish we could’ve stayed longer! Charming and relaxing place. Spent most of the time at the pool and restaurant for dinner. Tried breakfast at their sister resort Prince of Whales (on the main strip) - about a 2min drive but free parking because we were staying at Pillar and Post. Our room was in the spa wing (upgraded category). Convenient to take the elevator up to the third floor, also liked the view of the indoor pool with spa music while waiting. Robes in room were super plush (may buy later), bed was huge and comfortable, we were greeted with all lights on in room and a letterhead with my name on it :) Nespresso caps in room - was missing stir sticks/spoons. AC unit was loud and had to run constantly all night, no auto function (got maintenance to check)...Drain plug in tub didn’t fully work - during my jet bath the water drained to the point of having to turn off jets. Ask for pillow options, you can request feather and foam (obusform?). Empty mini fridge in room, ours was missing a piece inside the door, but someone came and fixed that right away. Tv was good with good selection of channels, wish there was a tv guide channel or something like a guide but didn’t look into that much. View was peaceful looking through a pine tree canopy onto a quaint street. Pools were nice, water generally on the chilly cold side (but luckily it was 40 degrees out!). Nice fountain in outdoor pool. Pool service available at the outdoor pool - sadly they ran out of Pina Colda, but Strawberry Daiquiri was good (small portion). After the virus I would like it even more if the lounge beds had cushions, also would be nice to have larger towels and an umbrella for every couple loungers, would also be good if there was a pile of towels available at the indoor pool. Loungers by the second ladder pool entrance need to be moved so it can be safely used. Nice that both the indoor/outdoor pools were open until 10:30 - we took advantage and went night swimming indoors (had the pool all to ourselves :)). Would love to come back and experience the hot springs one day! All in all, a really great place and I’d love to come back! This relaxing retreat was exactly what I needed! <3 Read less
