Fairmont Royal York

Toronto, Canada

The hotel

One of Toronto’s landmark hotels, Fairmont Royal York was built by Canadian Pacific Railway in 1929 and has since welcomed dignitaries and royalty, including Queen Elizabeth II. Once the tallest building in the British Empire, the hotel is housed in a distinctive chateau-style high-rise building and offers a wealth of amenities to keep you busy in-between sightseeing. The fitness centre is almost a world of its own with lap pool, children’s wading pool, steam rooms, saunas and a state-of-the-art gym. Two levels of shops are enough to satisfy the most ardent of shoppers with more shops located directly underneath the hotel in the PATH complex. Several exceptional restaurants cater to every kind of culinary desire. For mouth-watering steaks, look no further than Benihana Japanese Steakhouse and for the best martinis in town, head to the Library Bar with its rich furnishings and elegant atmosphere. Not to be missed is the afternoon tea and Rooftop Garden Tour, held every Saturday and Sunday.

Perfect trip to Toronto but the Fairmont Royal York was awful. It's not a big secret that the hotel industry is going through a crisis. In a couple of days, the Fairmont Royal York Hotel in Toronto will greet some NHL players to end the hockey season. Right now though, they service rooms every third day, their shops are closed, their lobby is for passing through only and their indoor pool is also closed but might reopen. Let's hope NHL players received better service than regular customers. Employees and management did not have the courtesy to explain to me upon my arrival, while checking in, how things were functioning at the hotel. I had to find out by myself and got different stories. There was a form letter on my desk in the room but is was really vague, not transparent and not informative at all. Furthermore, the staff wasn't well trained to inform customers, one bellman was impolite while I was waiting in the lobby and I wasted a lot of time getting the real story. It's the worse hotel experience I have ever had and I always give really positive reviews on hotels. For the price paid and with really no service, it was unacceptable. On the positive side though, they did give me a room with a nice view on the 6th floor (room 6-174) but again, there was no service. If you wanted anything, you really had to insist and wait: it was a frustrating process. They didn't offer me anything to compensate the situation. I arrived on July 18 and left on July 21. Read less

I stayed here for two different weekends in a row during the pandemic. I did love the Fairmont so was really disappointed and shocked with both stays. Upon arrival of the first stay I had booked a luxury room and was surprised to find myself in a room that was not renovated. I called and was moved to another room. After a night of sleeping there the next day my room had not be cleaned. I called down and asked for it to be cleaned. Towels and coffee were left outside the room. We went out and returned to find the room still not cleaned and the bed not made towels still outside on the floor. I called to ask why it had not been cleaned. I said I'd make the bed. While making the best the duvet had brown stains all over it which looked like blood see attached picture. We were moved to a gold room after this and stayed there for a short time before checking out. I said I was dissapointed and would be back the following weekend for another stay. The next stay we were in a signature room. The room was really disappointing it stank like cigarettes all throughout the room and was disgusting. There was brown stains on the carpet as well as the bar area had not been cleaned. See photos. I did not call down to complain this time as I had complained last time but was really disappointed. I also noticed that food had not been cleaned in the hallway and was sitting there for 8 hours from the time we checked in until the time we came out and came back. This was not what I thought was Royal York standards. Especially while we are in the middle of a pandemic and it is a time for areas to have extra cleaning. Not what I was expecting at all. Read less

They were very gracious to open up their hotel to us health care professionals! Such an exquisite hotel! My fiancé and I have been to Fairmont Le Chateau Frontenac, Hotel Fairmont Chateau Laurier, and Fairmont Tremblant and the Royal York just lives up to the name. Thank you so much!

Our recent stay at the Fairmont Royal York was a tribute to the company’s commitment to manage a difficult situation and the staff’s meaningful efforts to make guests feel welcome and safe. The service was exceptional. I thank the staff for their courtesy, caring and for going the extra mile during this difficult period to make our stay safe and special. I want to recognize Ian the Doorman, Hy and Sophia from Royal Service who checked in regularly with me and my travel companion to ensure that our stay was wonderful. It was. We also salute you and the Fairmont chain for supporting front line healthcare workers and providing them a safe place to stay. This is more than admirable. We are also grateful for your hospitality and will stay again and will tell colleagues, friends and family about the quality of the service, commitment to health and safety and most of all the personal warmth. Thank you. Read less
