The Westin Harbour Castle

Toronto, Canada

The hotel

A luxurious, landmark waterfront hotel, Westin ensures your every comfort is met at the Harbour Castle. Beautifully appointed guest rooms with Westin’s signature Heavenly Bed and Bath offer a welcome retreat at the end of a busy day spent sightseeing. There’s also a heated indoor swimming pool in which to wallow and the WESTIN Workout Gym, overlooking the picturesque Toronto Islands — enough to inspire anyone to take to the treadmill! Afterwards, recline in the whirlpool or, if you’ve still energy to spare, perhaps a game of tennis or squash may tempt you. There are plenty of restaurants close by but highly recommended are both the hotel’s eateries. The Mizzen serves exquisite à la carte dishes alongside a very tempting buffet. Our SuperFoods menu features revitalizing dishes made from healthy ingredients rich in nutrients, antioxidants and delicious taste so you can feel energized and at your best all day. On the 38th floor, with panoramic views of the city and the lake, is Toula Restaurant and Bar, one of North America’s premier culinary destinations. Sit back and admire the views as you feast on gourmet Italian cuisine and fine wine.

When the hospital where I work mentioned that the Westin had a special staycation promo for health care workers, I couldn't resist booking a room here for a Saturday night. It was a great rate including parking and wifi is free if you are a Mariott Bonvoy member, so it made for a very affordable COVID getaway. The good: - Friendly staff - Convenient location for walking around the Harbourfront or taking a ferry to the islands. The Distillery District and St. Lawrence market are also close (20-30 mins walk). - Room was comfortable, especially the King bed. There's a reason Westin is famous for their "heavenly beds". The mattress, pillows, and linens made for the best sleep ever! - Many rooms have a view of the lake, which is nice. Our room faced east but you could still see a bit of the water. - Well appointed rooms with bar fridge, smart TV, and robes (upon request). There is free coffee and tea in the lobby, as well as a snack bar. You can also order pizza and other hot food items in the evening, although we did not do this as there are many options within walking distance for takeout (and patios have just been allowed to re-open in Toronto as of June 11!). - Inviting lobby area. - Everything was super clean. There are hand wipes in the room and there is sanitizer in the lobby and elevators. - We were surprised to find breakfast bags at our door in the morning (juice, yogurt and granola, muffin, apple). Not sure if it was included in our room rate or if they threw it in for free due to the issues we faced (see below), although we didn't bother to complain... The not-so-good: - pool and terrace are still closed (not their fault! COVID restrictions... just a bummer as it looks really nice!). - Room furniture is somewhat dated and showing a bit of wear and tear. - When we checked in to the room, there was an exposed duct in the ceiling and the smoke detector had been covered with plastic (from the previous guest). We told the front desk staff to have someone cover the duct while we were out walking by the lake, as we didn't want them doing it later while we were in the room. We went out for a few hours but when we came back at night, no one had fixed it. We figured they probably don't have staff at night to do that type of work, so we did not call the front desk again. We just left it, but it did end up making some noise. I slept through it, but my partner found the noise distracting and woke up a few times. Overall, a nice hotel experience and I would recommend this hotel particularly if you are interested in activities in the Harbourfront area. It is also really close to Union station, so great for catching the UP express to the airport or VIA rail trains. Parking is $10/day if not included in your room rate, which isn't bad at all. I stayed one night. My room smelled stale, and the heater was very noisy. I could hear noise from another room. Overall my sleep was not good. The bathroom was the worst of many I've stayed in during my recent business trips to Toronto. Two decades overdue for an upgrade. The parking situation was nothing short of dangerous. I was directed to self-park in what was previously the valet parking area. When I went to retrieve my vehicle, I asked the front desk if it was possible to walk up to my car on a staircase - not the ramp, which wasn't built for pedestrians. I was told walking up the down ramp was the best route. This was a potentially perilous situation had an oncoming vehicle been travelling fast. Also, when I asked the front desk for directions to a nearby grocery store, the attendant seemed dumbfounded as if no one had ever asked that question. Overall, everything about the place was disappointing, especially since I had stayed there many years ago and had a wonderful experience. Read less

HI, My wife stayed for a week for an in town vacation and the kids and I were occasional visitors. The suite was fantastic, but the best part was the client service team. What an amazing group they have. Vanessa upgraded us to the suite and arranged for a relaxing welcome package of extras including some bubbly. Rebecca also deserves a mention for making the stay better. The doormen Brian and Al? and Nick on security were kind, helpful and knowledgeable. I have stayed at a lot of Relais Chateaux hotels in Europe and am used to the superb service and I was very happy to see that this Toronto landmark reaches that level. Everyone I dealt with was a genuine human with personality, friendliness and smarts that went beyond what one would expect in a large organization. Thanks for making our stay so memorable. We will definitely come back ! Read less
