DAY 1

Arrive independently in Alder Bay. Depart Alder Bay aboard a high speed water taxi for a scenic 25-minute service across Johnstone Strait to Farewell Harbour on Berry Island (if you are joining from Port Hardy Airport, your journey begins with a complimentary shuttle from the airport to Alder Bay). Berry Island lies at the epicentre of one of the most biologically active regions on the coast, and is mostly protected due to its unique natural and cultural history. Upon arrival at Farewell Harbour Lodge, you’ll be warmly greeted by the staff, provided with a short orientation and lunch and then settled into your rooms. Afterwards, head out onto the water for an afternoon marine mammal viewing excursion or optional sea kayak paddle in the protected waters of Johnstone Strait and Robson Bight Ecological Reserve. From July to September, witness the sea teeming with salmon as they try and elude their mighty predator, the blackfish, or Orca. Earlier in the spring, seek out other marine life such as steller sea lions, Pacific white sided dolphins, Dall’s porpoises and humpback whales. Return to the lodge by 4:30pm and join your fellow travellers for dinner at 6:30pm. After dinner, sit fireside in the lounge for an evening presentation on some aspect of coastal ecology. Welcome appetizers and dinner included. (Please note you will need to arrive into Canada before the first day of the tour, to allow time to make your way to Port Hardy or Alder Bay). (D)

DAY 2

After breakfast, meet on the dock at 8:00am for the first full-day bear viewing adventure. Visit one of several estuaries where you will view bears either from a zodiac or on foot depending on the tide. Grizzlies forage on sedge, roots and berries in the spring and summer in the broad, braided estuaries as they await the fall feast of salmon. Return to the lodge by 4:30pm for dinner at 6:30pm, followed by an evening presentation on the Great Bear Rainforest, bears, whales or First Nations culture. (B/L/D)

DAY 3

After breakfast at 7:00am, head out on the water at 8:00am for your choice of another bear viewing safari or a more extensive marine exploration. Marine excursions can also afford an opportunity to learn about the cultural traditions of the Kwakwaka’wakw First Nations as we pass ancient villages sites, rock art called pictographs and other evidence of a rich history and vibrant present in the region. Return to the lodge by 4:30pm for dinner and evening program. (B/L/D)

DAY 4

A final morning commences with your choice of one of the following activities: a short morning sea kayak excursion in the protected and crystalline waters near Farewell Harbour Lodge, a marine excursion, or a guided interpretive rainforest hike. Return to the lodge and after lunch take the water taxi back to Alder Bay as your package comes to an end. . (Please note we strongly advise you to book a post night after the tour, if you are returning straight to the UK, to allow time to make your way from Port Hardy or Alder Bay). (B/L)

4- and 5-night packages are also available and include and include additional days marine mammal viewing, bear safaris, sea kayaking and First nations cultural site visits.

Meals: 3 breakfasts, 3 lunches and 3 dinners on 3-night package, 4 breakfasts, 4 lunches and 4 dinners on 4-night package, or 5 breakfasts, 5 lunches and 5 dinners on 5-night package.

Visa requirements

Electronic Travel Authorisation (eTA)

Visitors travelling to or transiting through Canada by air are now expected to get an electronic travel authorisation (eTA) to enter Canada. If you’re arriving into Canada by air from either the UK or another destination e.g. the USA, you’ll need an eTA. This costs CA$7 and lasts for 5 years or until your passport expires, whichever is first. If you’re travelling by land or sea, you won’t need an eTA when you enter Canada. However, you must travel with acceptable travel documents and identification, i.e. your passport.

For more information on eTA system, and to apply online, visit the official Canadian government website.

You're holiday is going ahead as planned

Thank you for your patience and understanding

Payments are being prioritised based on when the request was made, working in order from March 2020 onwards. We will always try to process refunds at the earliest opportunity, for requests before August our maximum timeframe is 120 days. As we are steadily reducing the maximum processing time for each new request, for refund requests made in August, we expect the maximum processing time to be 80 days, from the date the refund is requested. For those requesting a refund in September, we expect it to be processed within a maximum of 60 days, and then reduce to 30 days for refunds requested in October, before returning to normal levels.

We'll be in touch soon

To finalise the amendment, one of our customer advisors will phone you. We need to work through amend requests in departure date order so we can prioritise those with the most imminent travel plans, so you may have a longer wait than usual until we’re able to ring you back. We will help everyone that wants to move their holiday.

I returned early from holiday and have further questions?

You can contact our team by emailing feedback.backhome@virginholidays.com to discuss options on unused portions of your holiday. If you need to contact our team about amending an existing holiday or requesting a refund please log in to manage my booking.
