Oleo Cancun Playa

Cancun, Mexico

The hotel

Using minimalism to maximum effect, the sculptural ice-white architecture and matching monochrome interiors of Óleo Cancún Playa give it a calm chicness that’s a far cry from the buzz and colour of your setting — right at the start of the famously vibrant Cancún Hotel Zone. The dedication to ‘white’ is only really interrupted by flashes of blue — homage to the sea and surf just steps from the hotel. Overlooking the beach, the infinity pool adds a touch more turquoise, with the pool bar’s tropical-inspired cocktails adding their own shots of colour. The styling may be minimalist, but the features aren’t. You’ve got spa treatments, complimentary WiFi, an art workshop, and restaurant menus that take you from Japan to Mexico and Peru, with stops on the way for comfort food, international favourites, and bakery treats served up with Starbucks™ coffee.

This hotel is amazing. The staff really cares about you and they go above and beyond to satisfy you. It’s a very small hotel but the staff makes it so much more worth staying here. Enrique es el mejor!!!

Overall my experience at Oleo was ok. When we arrived to the resort we were greeted with a fresh cocktail that was very refreshing. After we were told that the room we booked was not available. This was a disappointment because we requested and paid for a room with a balcony. They told us we could switch rooms if a balcony becomes available and we never heard from anyone the entire week. We even put in a special request with the travel agency for a balcony. When asked if we had a special celebration I said it was my husbands birthday. We ended up meeting with someone who I thought was the concierge for "inspira" benefits but really he was just trying to get us to go over to the other hotel for a timeshare presentation. A few days had past and it was the day of my husbands birthday. I went to the lobby to see if they could decorate the room exc and the man at the front desk (Felix) looked at me like I was crazy. He said typically they need advanced notice. I understood this and asked if they could do it later in the week. He said no. I said is there anything we can do today? He said nothing. I said ok this is pretty disappointing. He said they may or may not be able to send a cake. I was happy they tried but also disappointed because I saw multiple pictures online if rooms decorated for special occasions and this was a milestone birthday for my husband so it was very important to me. Why couldn't they do it later in the week? Additionally we paid a lot of money for a cigar at the hotel shop and they did not have matches. The cashier let us know they would have them in the lobby. Again, we went into the lobby and were told no. They didn't have matches. The only reason I am giving this hotel 3 stars is because of the waitstaff- they are incredible. The restaurant and bar staff were sooooo nice. Iliana at breakfast was soooo sweet. Rey at the pool went out of his way to make sure we had what we needed all day long. He never stops working. I also loved the woman who works at the starbucks during the day and sushi by night. I can't remember her name but she is the best. I heard that in cancun the resort capacity is 30% max. On certain days it was packed. Hard to believe they were following the proper guidelines. I was also disappointed to see a lack of social distancing being enforced- mask wearing exc. All staff had their masks on at all times but they did not seem to enforce the wearing of masks for customers at the breakfast buffet. Overall with everything going on we had a good time. I don't think we would choose to go back to Oleo. We have stayed at other resorts and had better experience.I have one last area for improvement. Place more beach umbrellas in the pool/longe area. Also I saw many many people falling in the hallways near the lobby bar because they were wet and too slippery. Maybe get carpets? Read less
